Hypnosis and/or self hypnosis is gaining a lot of popularity lately – even with the medical community. More and more people are using it successfully in all areas of their lives, from quitting smoking and losing weight, to more deep-rooted behavioral problems related to self esteem problems.
However, there are still a large amount of myths and beliefs regarding hypnosis that simply aren’t true. Here are seven myths about hypnosis you probably thought were true:
1. Only a certain "type" of person can be hypnotized.
Not true. Almost anyone can be hypnotized. It doesn’t matter how intelligent you are, how poor you are or even how "ornery" you are.
2. I might not remember everything that goes on during a hypnosis session.
False. Hypnosis and self hypnosis is merely a state of complete physical and mental relaxation. You will be full aware of everything that goes on – unless you fall asleep!
3. I might not be in control if someone else hypnotizes me.
Actually, all hypnosis is self hypnosis. With hypnotherapy, a trained hypnotist aids you in hypnotizing yourself. They then give you suggestions that are reaching your subconscious during this completely relaxed period.
4. I tried self hypnosis once. It didn’t work for me.
Self hypnosis is not a process that will work "miracles" after the first time. You are trying to change belief systems that have been ingrained for a while. Although it works faster than most therapies, hypnosis is still a process that may take some time.
5. I didn’t feel any different while I was hypnotized. It didn’t work for me.
Sometimes the changes seem very subtle, so it may be hard for you to tell if you have reached the trance state. Look for signs – how did your body react to the suggestions of heaviness or lightness? How absorbed were you during the relaxation process? Did more (or less) time pass than you thought it did? That’s a good sign. Keep practicing.
6. I might get "stuck" in a trance.
No one has ever gotten stuck in a trance, although some people may not want to come out of the trance because they are enjoying the feeling of complete relaxation.
7. I might reveal secrets I don’t want people to know.
Remember, you are fully aware during hypnosis and self hypnosis. You can’t do anything you don’t want to do. That includes being hypnotized.
Hypnosis for therapy is not a pallor game or stage show. It is an effective self improvement tool and a way to quickly change your behavior and habits.
